ABOUT MY CLASSES

Periodically, I teach online classes in what I call Mindfulness Based Impulse Reduction. My classes are modeled somewhat on the empirically proven Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction program developed by Jon Kabbat Zinn, Ph.D, and assoc. at the Center for Mindfulness at the University of Massachussetts, Worcester.

At the request of a friend I took the MBSR class with her. I was SO delighted, I turned right around and took it again!

Why? Because I was stunned to find it mirrored in many ways my own inner process for moving beyond the entrapment of BFRBs by utilizing a mindfulness based approach.

It gave me the language and a solid framework for what I had practiced myself, that I could adapt and teach to others.

Once I saw how incredibly useful it could be for BFRBs, I trained to become an MBSR Instructor, and am a Graduate of the Center for Mindfulness’ Teacher’s Practicum, endorsed by the University of Massachusetts, Worcester.

.

My course is loosely based on the MBSR framework developed by Dr. Kabat Zinn et al, but I have adapted it greatly for addressing BFRBs.

The course is 9 weeks long, and contains the tools I have used (and continue to use!) to strengthen and maintain my 30 years + of strong BFRB Recovery.

The fact is that to address, and change, a behavioral pattern that has been reinforced thousands, even millions, of times over the years, and create new neural pathways, will require a consistent, persistent, approach best done without goal-based pressure (i.e.: You MUST stop by a particular date; perhaps your birthday, the wedding, the stage performance, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving, etc.)

Although sometimes motivating, more often than not, I have seen that these types of inner demands/ narratives undermine self-worth and tend to stunt effective, life-changing progress.

The tools in this course are the ones that have kept me pull and pick free for over 30 years now, and have helped me navigate well even when Life has been at its most difficult!

My goal in offering these classes is to:

  • Teach you a cohesive, adaptive, mindfulness-based life approach capable of reducing unwanted behaviors and improving the quality of your life.

  • Create a heart-centered, experiential interpersonal network "in-the-world-you-live-in" for day-to-day support.

  • Help integrate current science knowledge with one’s own personal Life path in a way that supports long-term recovery.

STUDENTS WILL LEARN:

There are 3 phases to the course:

  1. Investigation - where we learn how to investigate our own awareness, learn to enhance it, and then apply it to our behavioral triggers with a goal of understanding why we do what we do….

  2. Discovery - where we experiment with a variety of sensory, emotional, and cognitive tools, finding what actually resonates, and practice utilizing these “transition tools” in order to wean ourselves from the learned default of BFRB behaviors.

  3. Integration - where we begin the process of aligning our practice with our deeper self in order to live the life we truly want to live.

SEE YOU IN CLASS!
